Visit Livorno, one of most romantic coastal cities of Tuscany

Livorno is a charming city located on the Western coast of Tuscany, and is considered one of the most important port of Italy. Like every port city, Livorno has always been a crossroads and melting pot of the world's cultures and owes its fascinating charm to this multiethnic aspect. Its origins date back maybe to prehistoric times, while many Etruscan and Roman remains have been found all closeby; during the XVIth century, the Medici Family contributed in the development of the city and its sea port, charging the renowed artist Buontalenti with the construction of a new fortified city with fosses and bastions, that gave Livorno those aspect that we can see today.

What to see and do in Livorno

One of the most enchanting quarters of the city is La Venezia, a Venezia- style quarter with canals (dating back to the Medici era) crossing the all district, small bridges and boats that reminds one of the city in Northern Italy. It is situated in the historical center near the New Fortress.

One of most suggestive places is the Terrazza Mascagni, a great chessboard-style terrace made of many white and black tiles located along Viale Italia, separated from the sea by an elegant parapet with columns. The ideal venue for a romantic break facing the sea!

If you visit Livorno with kids, one of the attractions you should see is the Aquarium, with colorful fishes, turtles and many others: a funny break from the city seightseeings that your kids will surely appreciate.

Dont'miss its great seafood traditions: there are many restaurants both in the historical center as along the seaside where you can taste fresh and delicious fish dishes.
Also, don't forget to try the ponche, the exclusive coffee receipt of Livorno!

Visit one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany: the charming Lucca!

Lucca is one of the cities most loved all of Tuscany, a stop you can't really miss!
The city is located on a plain at the foot of the Apuan Alps and is less than half an hour from the coast of Versilia. Since it isn't a hilltop village, it is ideal for anyone with mobility issues as well as for anyone wishing just to take a relaxing walk!

Most of the attractions in Lucca today show its ancient history: from the trace of the Roman amphiteater that can be seen in the shape of the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro to the archeological remains under the 12th century church of Saints Giovanni and Reparata (the first city cathedral, located just around the corner from the present-day cathedral of San Martino), to the various towers and villas from the 12th to 16th centuries.

Extraordinarily, as the city grew and modernized, the walls that surrounded the old town were maintained which was not the case for many other cities in Tuscany, including Florence. As the walls lost their military importance, the top of the walls became a pedestrian promenade, today one of Lucca's main attractions. The area around the walls is well taken care of, with green grass and trees everywhere along the walls. They have in essence become a park that surrounds the city and blocks out more modern life.

Other top attractions include the Piazza of San Michele with its beautiful Church of San Michele in Foro, the Basilica of San Frediano as well as the Clock Tower and Guinigi Tower, to name just a few.

The city of Pistoia will be a true discovery: it is located at the foot of the Tuscan Apennines Mountains and it is about 30 kilometres north-west of Florence.
A few kilometres from other more famous destinations in Tuscany, such as Florence, Lucca and Pisa, lies one city a little off the usual beaten paths. Walking through the streets of Pistoia, which dates back to Roman times, you'll find many traces of the past. Pistoia was the centre of Gallic, Ligurian and Etruscan settlements before becoming a Roman colony, founded in the 2nd century to support the Roman troops in their battle against the Ligurians.

What to do in Pistoia:
  • Piazza Duomo is the centre of the artistic and historic city of Pistoia and medieval buildings that form a wonderful architectural framework circle it. The bell tower, which was converted in the thirteenth century from a tower of the Lombard era, dominates the square and three floors were added. Climb the 200 steps, and enjoy the amazing panoramic view of the city!
  • Visit the Basilica of San Zeno, the Baptistery, the Bishop's Palace and the Cathedral Museum.
  • Take a walk into its narrow streets and small places
  • Do some shopping
  • Taste Necci, the tipycal sweet dessert made with chestnut flour

Discover the Tuscan wine region of Chianti on a 8/9-hours scenic tour! The drive itself is magnificent: enjoy the view of Chianti hills covered by vineyards and olives trees, with the cypresses that became soon familiar.
But first of all, you will stop in Siena, probably Italy's loveliest medieval city. Its heart is the central "piazza" (square) known as Il Campo. The Piazza del Campo is the site of the famous Palio delle Contrade horse race that takes place twice a year and whose origin dates back to the 14th or 13th century. You can see the Gothic, imposing S. Domenico Church where some of Italy's most important frescos are held and maintained. This square is one of the most beautiful tour destination in Europe.
At lunch time, together with your experienced Driver-Guide you will choose if stopping at one of many traditional “trattoria” in Siena surroundings or to go deep in the Chianti countryside and stop at a local farmhouse: in both cases, you will enjoy a real Tuscan lunch paired with the delicious wines produced in the region. You cannot miss, at the end of the lunch, to experience a glass of the famous Vinsanto (“holy wine”, a sweet dessert-wine) that always comes together with a few Cantuccini almond biscuits: after dipping your Cantuccini in the Vinsanto, you will learn why this is the most beloved dessert in Tuscany!
In case of lunch in Siena, you'll be afterwards driven to a traditional Chianti estate: enjoy a tour of the wine cellars, to gain an insight into the various stages of wine production, take a sit and taste the various wines that the winery produces, paired with appetizers, local cheese and often bruschetta and salami.
In the afternoon, drive back to Florence.
